The First Church of Christ in Hartford, also known as Center Church, is the oldest and still active Christian community in the City of Hartford. Since its founding by the Rev. Thomas Hooker, who established the city in 1636, there has always been a “Center Church” on Hartford’s Main Street.
Faithful to the teaching and message of Jesus Christ, Center Church is an Open and Affirming congregation whose doors are open to all God’s beloved children. welcome everyone into our community regardless of ethnic or cultural background, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, political views, mental or physical ability, immigration status or religious tradition. All means all – no exceptions and no exclusions.
Our members come from the city as well as many of the surrounding suburbs. Diverse in culture, background and age, LGBTQ+, married, single, divorced and widowed, young professionals and retired: the friends and members of Center Church are drawn together by their shared commitment to being an example of chosen family, Christian love and solidarity in the heart of the City of Hartford.
Uplifting worship, thought-provoking sermons, inspiring music, and hands-on urban ministries make Center Church a vital faith community in the city. We offer extensive education and cultural programs for children, youth, and adults both in the Meeting House and in the Church House.
At Center Church, we never place a period where God has only put a comma! At Center Church, we believe that God is still speaking and all we have to do is listen.
