Center Church

The First Church of Christ of Hartford is much more than a Congregational Church, it is also an inseparable and fundamental piece of the history of the City of Hartford, the State of Connecticut and the American democracy. As the institution that founded the first English settlement in the area in 1636, Center Church holds in its heart and soul almost four centuries of social, political and religious history.

As guests and visitors enter the Meeting House, they quickly become aware that in every architectural detail, every instrument and stained-glass window, in every commemorative plaque and pew, there is the essence of the glorious past of Hartford.

The Meeting House, besides being one of the oldest buildings in the city, is also an architectural gem of Hartford, drawing tourists from near and far who want to appreciate its splendor and sacredness. The opportunities Center Church offers to educate residents as well as visitors about the relevance of institutions in shaping the ethos of a larger community are invaluable.

Friends of Historic Center Church understand the importance of preserving the memory and history of the City of Hartford by supporting the ongoing efforts to restore and protect the Meeting House on Main Street.
